The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s Youth Empowerment Initiative is excited to present its first-ever concert fundraiser, No Nukes! No Wars! A Concert for Peace, on Friday, May 25, 2007 at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, CA. The theme “No Nukes! No Wars!” reminds us that, in the Nuclear Age, all wars are fought in the shadow of potential nuclear holocaust: The United States maintains an arsenal of nearly 10,000 nuclear weapons, and eight other countries also wield these instruments of ultimate devastation. As a generation, we must rise up to demand a world free from the threat of war and free of weapons of mass destruction!

Music and art have always been very important means of promoting and spreading a message of peace. Join us in this celebration of the power of the people to realize a brighter future.

About the Performers

Radioactive - Originating from Boston, MA, Radio Active embodies the essence of hip hop life. He is an emcee, beatboxer, writer, and painter. He plays musical instruments, incorporates electronic beats with his beatbox and commands active audience participation during his always fresh, soulful original live performances. Most recently he expanded his career to include voice over work and educational workshops for children and young adults. Radio Active has toured extensively the past seven years throughout North America, Europe, New Zealand, Japan and Australia where he received two gold records as a member of the politically charged musical group Michael Franti & Spearhead. Tours included performing to audiences in theaters and festivals upwards of 100,000 people and appearing on national television programs such as David Letterman, Craig Kilborne and on MTV with the critically acclaimed single/videos “Rock The Nation” and “We Don’t Stop.”

Quinto Sol - Music can be contagious, inspiring, and poignant. Quinto Sol (QS), or Fifth Sun, caries that type of emotion and sound - deeply rooted in community and roots music - from the Americas, to the Caribbean and Africa. Having emerged from the artist/activist community of East Los Angeles in 1994, Quinto Sol is roots-reggae at its core, woven seamlessly with Latin rhythms like cumbia, rumba, and son. Quinto Sol is a collective of musicians, inspired to use music as a tool for awareness of socio-political and economic issues facing their community. They do this by translating their own urban realities in every day life and the struggles of indigenous communities in the world, through conscious lyrics and powerful live performances.

Aztlan Underground – Creating a new sound that is still evolving, Aztlan Underground captures the psyche and transcends to all ethnic groups, capturing a universal rhythm to convey their message of self-determination.  Rare has it been that a Latino rap group has been able to take the underground by storm without selling its soul. Their third release "Sub Verses" concocts the rage and wisdom of Chuck D with the passion of Rage Against the Machine. Concha shells, phat bass lines, native drums, Peruvian flutes and screaming guitar riffs create a sound that both liberate and inspire the soul. Their music creates a native ceremony; a healing process where indeed “la cultura cura” (Culture cures). Amidst the healing, a dual awakening is also taking place at 'no holds barred.' If music is supposed to inspire, not only do they spit fire, but they elevate our mind-state to a platform much higher.

Pussywillow Sparks - (alias Rebecca Riley, formerly of Clitorectomy & the Mutilators) first appeared in Santa Barbara, California in Spring of 2005. Her performances are typically intimate and sometimes un-amplified, allowing her voice to resonate in a natural atmosphere to a chilling effect. By-standers have remarked of getting goosebumps from her dramatic and unconventional singing style. Her shows tend toward performance-art rather than standard singer-songwriter performances. Pussywillow Sparks has been known to perform extemporaneous tap dances, songs written and executed on the spot, hula hooping, and the recitation of inflammatory and galvanizing political orations during her live shows. The latest release on her d.i.y. record label, Giant Flaming Dirigible Records, is The Tale of Pussywillow Sparks. This album narrates her journey from the mid-west to the Wild-West, and is full of stories of betrayal, adventure, and danger. Songs off of her first release, Soapbox EP, range from fiery calls for revolution against the oppressive politics of America's elite governing powers to songs of personal empowerment in the realm of romance. She has been bestowed the honorary title of the House Singer-Songwriter at Muddy Waters Café in Santa Barbara, and is currently headlining shows at coffee shops, community spaces, bars, and art galleries in Santa Barbara, as well as venues and festivals in Isla Vista. Performance videos, pictures, and songs are available for download on Pussywillow Sparks' myspace page: www.myspace.com/pussywillowsparks.
